*Europe is only a small part of the Earth's land surface, but in the early twentieth century a few small European states had the power to dominate most of the world.
*The bristish colonies included territories in Africa, Asia, The Americas and The Pacific.
*France also had a large empire, Germany was a late commer in the race for colonies and its empire was much smaller then those of England and France.
